Alfred C. Schairer, 88, a retired founder of the Mayer-Schairer Co., died yesterday in St. Joseph Mercy Hospital following a week's illness. He had lived at 902 Rose Ave.

Mr. Schairer was born Oct. 25, 1874, in Scio township, the son of John G. and Rosina Maier Schairer. He came to Ann Arbor at the age of 14 and attended the public schools here.

He learned printing when he was 18 and entered the printing business with the late Adam Goetz and Clyde Kerr. In February, 1910, he formed a partnership with Oswald Mayer and Walter Schoettle at 112 S. Main St., later known as the Mayer-Schairer Co., which he operated until retiring seven years ago.

Mr. Schairer was a member of Bethlehem United Church of Christ, Golden Rule Masonic Lodge No. 159, Elks Lodge No. 325 and the Knights of Pythias.

He married Lydia Staebler of Ann Arbor on Aug. 25, 1898. She preceded him in death Nov. 13, 1959.

Mr. Schairer is survived by a son, Roy M. of Ann Arbor; a daughter, Mrs. Burt Peterson of Brooklyn, Ia.; two grandsons, James A. Schairer serving with the Signal Corps in Bangkok, Thailand, and Thomas Schairer, a senior at Eastern Michigan University; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Muehlig Chapel with the Rev. Ernest R. Klaudt officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethlehem United Church of Christ memorial fund.
