Big names join board of local bank

Two of the Ann Arbor area’s better known names in sports and commerce have joined the board of directors of First of America Bank-Ann Arbor.

Bo Schembechler, football coach and athletic director at the University of Michigan, and Jon Barfield, president of Barfech Inc., have been named to the board.

First of America Bank-Ann Arbor is a member of the 44-bank holding company of First of America Bank Corp. The corporation services more than 200 communities in Michigan, Indiana and Illinois.

“We are delighted to have these two highly-respected leaders join our board,” Douglas Freeth, president of First of American Bank-Ann Arbor.

Schembechler, who has been head coach at the U-M since 1969, is the winningest active football coach in the country, with a 184-46-5 record. He was named athletic director in May 1988.

He also is a member of the board of directors for Domino’s Pizza Inc. and the Detroit Tigers.

Barfield is president of Bartech Inc., as well as vice president and general counsel for Barfield Manufacturing Co., both located in Ypsilanti.

Bartech, Inc., provides contract engineering and related technical services to major corporations in automotive, aerospace, data processing, telecommunications, petroleum and chemical processing. Barfield Manufacturing produces products for automotive companies and their suppliers as well as prototype short-run machining and electro-mechanical assembly services.

Barfield is a member of the executive committee of the Board of Trustees of Princeton University. He is also a member of the Michigan State Chamber of Commerce.

Barfield, an Ypsilanti native, is a graduate of the Harvard Law School and served as an associate attorney with Sidley and Austin in Chicago from 1977 to 1981.
