Salk Polio Inoculations To Start In Ann Arbor May 2

Full Schedule For Washtenaw Children Told

Second Shot To Follow First By Three Weeks; Vaccine Due Today

Some of Ann Arbor's first and second grade school children will get their first shots of the Salk polio vaccine on Monday, May 2. Second shots will he given three weeks later.

Dr. Otto K. Engelke, county health director, announced the today after he received from Lansing that the supply for Michigan school children had arrived.

Inoculations in some outlying Washtenaw schools will start as early as Friday, April 29. Inoculations in Ypsilanti school will start on Tuesday, May 3.

In all instances, the second shot will follow the first by three weeks. The entire program will be completed in all county schools by May 27.

Will Bring Vaccine

Miss Kay Dohn of the County Health Department and Mrs. James A. Nichols, volunteer worker for the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, will travel to Lansing this afternoon and return with the vaccine.

There are an estimated 7,000 first and second graders in Washtenaw county who are eligible to receive the vaccine, which the Foundation is providing without cost to parents.

Parental consent slips will be distributed later this week. Some 65 volunteer workers, under the direction of Mrs. Nichols, will assemble printed materials at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Tappan Junior High School cafeteria.

About 100 county physicians and similar number of volunteer nurses will take part in the program, in addition to Foundation volunteers and members of the Junior Chamber of Commerce Auxiliary.

Replaces First Schedule

The new schedule replaces an earlier schedule announced on April 6 and printed in The News.

The new schedule was arranged after Dr. Jonas E.
