Some of the political papers are quite horrified becauee the ladies have taken to belting on the presidential eiection. It appears frora the 1'hüadeJphia papers that 'a demorratic lady in Williamsport has $500 to bet ihat J. K. Polk will be elected President of these United States next fall;' ond also, that a whig lady of Milton sends her respects tö tho democratie lady in Williamsport,' and informa her that she has SlOOO ready, which sbo will stake against the VVillinmsport lady's $500, that James K. Polk will not be elected President of these United States, and $00ü in addition, that Henry Clay will beat James K. Polk in Tennessee, his own state, five Ihousand votes.' Now.although we utterly disapprove of bet - tiuor on elections, yet we. en'er our protest against the monopoly of betting and gambling contended for by men. We go for "the largest überty," "equal righls," and "no monopoliee." Why should not a ludy bet on Polk or Clay as much as a man? lias ::ot a ivoman spirit? Has sbc not zenl? Has she not as much al stake in the eiection as her husband, brother, falher, or lover? Then why this exclusiveness- ihis narrownees of spirit?
