Church honors Mial for community work

The Church of the Good Shepherd will present the “Award for Servant Leadership in Building a Beloved and Just Community” to Dr. Joetta M. Mial, principal of Huron High School, at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Dr. Mial is the fourth recipient of this award given on King Festival Sunday; in 1987, the first award was presented to the late Rev. John A. Woods, then pastor cf Bethel A.M.E. Church.

Other recipients are Dr. Charles E. Cobb, Emeritus ex-Director of the Commission for Racial Justice of the United Church of Christ, and Blondeen Munson, long time active Ann Arbor resident for justice.

The text for Dr. Joetta M. Mial’s award reads, in part: “The Church of the Good Shepherd and the Rev. Herbert R. Lowe, Pastor, recognize the Justice Ministries of Dr. Joetta M. Mial: For her labors as Principal of Huron High School in making the school a welcoming place for all students; for her commitment to African-American Youth and their struggles to achieve academic excellence through her support for the Black Student Union and the Black Parents Support Group.”

Dr. Mial with her husband Harry Mial and sons Harry, Jr., Rick and Scott have been active members of the Ann Arbor Community for many years. A reception in honor of Dr. Mial will follow the celebration.

The Ann Arbor community is encouraged to join the church in this time of recognition for one of Ann Arbor’s African-American educators who serves us well on the “educational front lines of our community.”
