At a mtL'tmg of the Students of the University of Michigan, held Oct. 21, P. W. H. Rawk was cnlled to the cliair, nnd D. B. Brown, appointed Secretary. The object of the meeting was then stnted, to wit: to adopt resolutions expressive of the (eelings of the smden'.s on account if thedeath.of Mr. A.C. Stakkwüather, a late ineniber nf the present Sophomore class.- On motion. ii. was resolved that a committee of four, one f. om each of the College classes, be appointed to draft a set of resolutions in accord anee with ihe object of the meeting. The following gentlemen werc appointed by thechatr. Judson Ollina, of the Senior class. Anthony Mosher, " Junior " D. B. Brown, " Sophomore clasa. Alfrcd Duboia, " Freshman " On motion t was resolved, that said committee repor: tomorrow, Oct. 2'.ï. at 5 o'clock, P. M. The meeting was then ndjourned. D. BISHOP BROWN, Sec'y. P. W. H. Rawls. Charmain. Oct. 22, 1844. An adjourned meeting of the students of the University of Michigan was ca! led to order by the President. The meeting then reported the following: Gkntlemks: - The committee appointed to drait re8olutions expressive of the feelinys of this meeting in reierence to the' mtlnncholy event which cnlls us together. would respectfully report: That they feel themselves at a los how to discharge the mournfu! duties which you have imposed upon them. In common with you they are afiected with íeelinga too deep for utterance! OnDofour number has passed away. Albert O. Starkweather departed this liie on Thuraday Evening last, in the 2lst yenr of lus nga. During the past year he had been known and loved and honored arnong us for his affability - his kindliness - his manly virtues, and faithful performance of his duües ns a student. We have recently come 'ogether ofter a short 3eparation to enier upon the duties of anoiher year. He met not with us! We feit to yrnpathise withhim in the cauaes of his absence, the sickness of a Mot her - the deaih of a Father. - We listened to the assurance that he would return. Scarcoly had the words which gave us this assurance died away, ere we were startled with the nformation of his dangerous" illness - and now of his deaih! Heis gone - forevef gonel and we are lelt to mourn! We cannot speak our ñor were it possible would your committee wish to express in words the language of Borrow writtcn upon every countenance. There let it remain until the feeling which it indicates seftle bnek deep into the heart whence it sprung. The event is is one of thrilling interest. We have never before been visited by death. He has come very near us.but no one of our number has ever before feit his chilling grasp. The' sepulchral voice which tells of Eternity has never before sounded in our midst. In view of these considerations your commi tee would respectfully rocommeñ'd the adóptio of the (o)lowing resolutions as in sorr.e oli'ght de gree expressiye of the feeling existing in referenc to tiiis melancholly event. Resolved. In consequence of he recent death of Albert O. Starkweather, and as a tribu'té to his memory, thnt crape be wonj upon the lelt arm for thé ppace of 30 daysby the members of the Sophomore class of which he lately was a member. and 10 days by the' members 'of the Senior, Junior and Freshman classes. . Resolved, That we, 6ympathize deeply with the afflicted mother and family of the deceased in their bereavementa". Resolved, That na an expression of this sympathy, acopy of (hese resolutions be forwarded to the mof her of the deceased. Resolved, That the proceedings ó'f this and the last meeting be eigned by the Chairman and Secretary and published in the papers of this vil'ege.. .. All of which. when rcad, waaadopted.
