-My eldest son was crossuig the fieldd ïu tho country, somo distance frona auy divjlling, wheu ie was pursued by a large and fieree dog, elonging to the gentlom ut whj.sa land ie was erossing. The lad was alarnied, nd ran for his lifo. Ho struok into a )iece of woods and the dog gained upon lim, wheu he looked round to see how noar tho craature w;is and tumbling over a stone, he was pitched off a precipice and broke his lag. Unabla to move, and at the rnercy of the beast, the poor fellow saw the dog coming down upou him, and expected to bo seizad and torn ; when to lis surprise, tho dog cama near, and psrceiving the boy was hart, instantly whoeled about and went off for that aid which he oould uot rendor ïhere was nu one within reach of the child's voioe, and ie must have perished thsre or have dragged his brokcu limb along, aud deitroyed it so as to render ampatation noeeasary, if the dog didnotbring hun help. Ho held up his leg, and it huug at a right angle, shovving him plainly tha nature of jis misfortuno, and tho neoBSsity of lying still. The dog went off to tho nearost house aud barked for hslp, Uuabla to arrest attentio:i, he made auother visit of sympathy to the boy, aud then ran to he house, there making suoh domonstrations of anxiety, that the family follcwed him to the place where the child lay. - Now, observe that this dog was pursuing tho boy as an euemy ; but the momeut he saw his enemy prostrate and in distress, bis rage was turnad to pity, aud he flcw to his relief. Hero was truc feeling, and tho course he pursued showed good judg mtíut. He was a dog of hoart and headI do not aay that he "reasoned" in this matter ; bnt there is soniething in his. conduct on this occasion, shat looks so niuch hke the right kind of feeling and action, that I think it deserves to be reeorded to his credit. As few dogs will read thc record, I coramcnd the example to all mankiud for their imitation.
