Mis. Lumsden was in deücatü health. lier only son, a fine youth of sixteen, was her constant companion, and Uy his filial devotion and g;ntlünu8s, won the udmiration and love of all who kuew and observed him. There was, too, in tho family a romarkably swect and bftautiful littlo flasen-haired, bluo-eyed gii-1 of bíx yearB, an adopted chi d, upon wljom Col. Lumsden and his lady lavishcd all the aflection of the fondest parents. The beau'iful seenery and the r aro sport of Mackinaw and Lake Superior, described to him by the visitors to that región, had exuited his imagination, and, no doubt, induced his aocetance oí the invitation to join tha excursión whicli has had so aad and tragic a conclusión. So genorous was tho nature of Col. Lumsden, so true ar.d sincero in his regard for the gentío sex, that wo sh'ould have httle hope of his escapo in a disaster, where the claims and wcakness of wouian duinauded 3elf-sac;ifice.
