"U's only a Hule grate.' they id, 'Only just a child that's dead;" Andsothev earelessly tumedaway From the mound the spade had made that ïay, Ahl they did not know how deep a shade That lütU grave in our Aome hath made. I knew the coffin was nárrow and staall, One yard would have served for an ampie pall, And one man in hia arma could hare borne away The rosewood and its freight of clay; But I knew that darling hope were hid Beneath that little coffiu-lid I knew that a mother gtood that day With folded haudj by that form of olay; I knew that burningtear wre hid 'NcatU the drooping lath and achiny lid; And I knew her lip. and eheek, and brow Were almost ai white as her baby' now. I knew that ome thing were hid way - The erimson frock, and wrapping gay; The little sock, and the balf worn thoe, cap with it plume and tassels blue; And an nnpty erib, with it covers spread As white as the face of the sinless dead Tm little grave; but, oh! hare care! For world wide hopea are buried there; And ye, perhaps in coming yenra, May sie, like her, through b'linding tear, How much of light how much of joy, Is buried up wiih an only boy!
