The New York Journal of Oommerce makes the subjoined statement: 1A very distinguished clergyman ot od6 of th3 important branches of the Protestant church in the United States, has reeently returned from an extensive tour in the South, whieh gave a good opportutiity of eonversing fully with many of the wisest and bost cliristian men in Kentucky, Georgia, the Caro.inaa and Virginia. He reporta that whilst the pooplo of South Carolina are well nigh unanimous in favor of a speedy secession, there is in the other States just narned, a large number of people who are not in favor of taking that step, at least not yet He says, howevcr, ihat thefeeline; in favor of secession ia unquestionably gaining strength every day. In relaüon to the cause oí this deplorable state of things, ho avs that as ar as he eould learn fr;m deoidedly religious men with whom he conversed, he is confiiient thnt it is not to be found solulv or miiinlv in tho nleulion of Mr. Lincoln to the Preaidency; nor even the existenee of laws in tnany of the Northern States to defeat the Fugitive Slave The cause lies dooper th:in all tliis in the minds of good man.
