On tho following (Tueeday) morning the committee reported the following preamble and rcsolutions, which wer accepted and adopted without discus9ion. Wherets, It has been asserted that the riot which ocourred at the Free Church, on baturday evening, whereby a meeting purporting j to bfi an abolition convention, was viulently broken up. and sundry damages dnne to the building w9 cliargenble entirdy to the Students of the Univeraity; and, whereas, the faet that n few of the students wtre implicated furnishes too just grodnds for thi charge thcrefore. Resolved, That, while we have no sympathy witb a dispsition to promúlgate sentiments hostile to the union of these United States, yet we believe it to be a right sacred to every ïndividiml in our country, to advooate ■whatevtr pnliucal opinions he sees fit, and that thuonly legitímate meana of opposing such opinion-, is by a proper exereise of the sameright of "Free Speech." Resolved, That il was the intention of the grcuter portion of the studenta present to see that ordor wns mnintained, and the right of free speech vindicated; that the ftw who disgraced themselves by engaging in the rio', were assisted by t rabble. no way connected ■wit'.i the University; and that we deprécate the whole iraneaction as a shameful violatioa ol order, and unworthy of men professing to live under the retriction of law. Rttolved, That sueh things are at the utmost variancé with the npirit of our institiition, whose ohiff offleer is atrongly iuclined to tolerat ion, and teache that it is best to permit heresies to run their course, tbat we may come al the trutli. Resolved, That it is our firra ennviction that no disturbance would have oecurred, if the City authorities had taken proper precautionary measures to prevent it; that their gratuiioua prediction of a mob to thosu desirins; the privilege of holding the meeting, did much to embolden ihose inclined to make diaturbancf; and a neglect to furniah any adequate pólice, pertnitted the eonsummation cf tlie (lisgrace, which might easily h ive been checked hy the presenee and discountenance of the authorities. The committee olso recommended that( these resolutions be offored to the City pa pers for publieation, -which, on motion was ndopted. B. F. BLAIR, C. H. DENISON, 5 J. H. EI-UOTT, ) Com. W.
