For example, the republicana in the Michigan Lcgulature havo set Lheir iVices " likc flint" against repcal or modificaron of the persoDal lib crty laws, whilo both housos ui' l!io Wiseonsin Logislature liavo adoptcd, witiiout dissent, the following rcsolutions : Wkereas, The States of Kentueky and Marylaud, wlie citizens suffer moro loss thau thoso of auy other States from the escape of their alavés, unmoved by ;;ny such pretexta, havo ktoly declarod thoir loyaliy to the constituí ion and tho Union; aad H'kcreas, Tho pcople of Wiscousin, inspirad !y such examples of patriotism, as well as actuated by a sense of their owu duty, are ready at all times to meet fraternal advances in tho spirit in whioh they are made, and to maintain in good faith any provisión of the Federal constitution ; thtrefore, Resolved, by the Señale, the Agtembly ookcurring, That the Judiciary Coiumittces of the Sonato and Asseiub'v be directed to examine aid revise tho laws of this State relating to kiduapping, babeas corpus, and ths renditioa of fugitives trom labor, so as to mako the same in all :hings conform to the constitution of the United States, if n anything they conlict therewith. If all tho nortliern Legislatures had been prompt in taking such action as WisL'or.Bm has now taken, what an influence for good woul'l it have had upon tho Nalional troublos. Had the great leaders if the republican party given assurances in November last, after the election, that they would esert their influenee to procure such action, we do not believo a single State, except, perhaps, South Carolina, would have seceded.
