Tho tclegrapli says tlnit ïïu, B. Astor, of New York, has proffered the governinent a gift of four millions of dollars, and a further loan of fourteen niillions. This is unheard of liberality, though it is no more than men of small means are doing in oontributing their tens and twenties. It shows, however, that capital, always conservativo, re garda the maintenance of the govcrnment, and the putting down of rebellion as all important. Without governmont capitalista have no security for their Jwealth, and they do well tolay it freely upon the altar of their country. And whilo they do it the governinent need not halt, but may push on .the work and conquer a peace in the oarliest possible time.
