A gentleman oí' this State, who arrived í'rom Washington last evening, having leít the Capítol on Friday moruing, brings mueh important and interosting iuformation in regard to the state of things there, and on the routo westward. Tho train by which he carne was the last that got through, the bridges north oí Baltimore having been broken down within three hou ra after he passod over them. Tho night beiore he left it became evident that those who wished to get out of the Capitol would have to do it at onco. Great numbers of ladies passed uorthward on Thursday evening, most northern men having sent their families to a place oí safety, and remained themselves to await the couree oí events. Great excitemont reigned in the city. Soeession sentimonts were openly or socretly professed by largo numbers of tho citizens and people frorn the South. No northern man ooneidered hiinself safe unless he enrolled himself as a volunteer, and thus camo under the protection of his fellow-soldiers. The sentiment of the people of the District is about equally divided, tho tseoessionists being mostly a desperate class of mea, The t-ntiro lorcoof troops in the city on Friday tnorning, was about 5000, of whom nearly half wero eorolled in the city itself. To these latter it would be dangerous to trust too much. By Kunday mormng the number of troops in Washington probably reached eight or ten thousand. In addiüon to these, threo ships of war, fully armed and equippod, liu below the city. A battery ol cannon is placed at the end ot the Alexandria bridge. Companies of soldiers aro pickoted all around the city and on tho avenues loading to it. Fly'mg artillory stand ready tbr instant service wherever required. Guard of observation aro stationed along the railroad between Baltimore and Washington, though not in sufficieut force to preserve tho properly if attacked by a largo force. The inembers oí tho government are determined on i desperate defense if attacked, and it is firmly believed in Washington that the southern army, if victorious, will find nothing to occupy but a heap of ruins. Hemmed in on all sidei, as by a wall of fire, the government and its supporters u the pational capitol will üght to the last, and will destroy what they cannot save irom capturo. Itisfoarod that Virginia is gathering a larga army to rush in on Wasliing ton and capture it beforo iurther precaution? can bo taken, and that Virginia troops will bo brought up secretíy to prevent tho arrival of any moro northern vol un teers. It sgenonilly belioved that Ben McCulloch is Ktill secretly hovering around the capital, raaturing bjs plans for a bold stroko. The Gov ernor oí Virginia has issuod a proclamation, calling the entire Virginia militia ioto the field. Tho secession ordinance of Virginia was passod under tho most coërcive measures. Those who voted against it were threatened vvith dcath, aad are flying irom the State in order to savo their necks. Spies dog the steps of all the anti secession delegates. Southern f pies re scatterod through Penn&yïvania giving information of the procgqdings. Tboy have buen telegrnpbtng tl. at tbere is no enthusiasrn, tbat voluntoora rafüae to come forwar.d, and ttiat the North will be in easy prey to the Southern artny. Governor i Curtiu !;;s buen mudo aware of tbese facts, and li:is taken possessioo of the vvires so as to prevent the transmission of Buen lying intelligonce. At Harrisburg, on FriJav, there were 2,500 troops in camp, armud, but badly provided with blankets and camp necessaries. Gkv. Curtin had gone to Philadelphia for a largo supply of everything needed, to bö sent by expruss to the earr.p. Jictween Harrisburg and Pitfaburg numerous truins of soldier were met, among them being tho Ohio troops. - Gov. Dennison had telegraphod for the return of the latter to protect that city frotn the secessionists, but, on loarning that the Wheeling people were ablo to defend themselves, ho couuterraanded the Ofder.
