Somo years ago a famous professor c:uiie to a town where I was thon ding, and announced that he could " cure the worst cases of' stuttering in ten minutes, without a surgical operation." A , friend of mine was an invetérate case, and I advised him to cali upon the womlerful mngician. He called, was convinced by the testimoniáis exhibitcd, struck up a bargain, paid the fifty dollars, and soon called at my office, as straight as a railroad track. I Was greatly astonialied, and asked my friend by what iniracle ho had been so 8trangely and suddenly relieved of his life long trouble. He most provokingly informed me that he liad made a snlemn pledge not to reveal the proceas of cure . I knew two other bad cases - ladiea - and, ealling upon them, reportod what had come to pasi They were soon at the professor's rooms, carne away greatly elated, raised a liuudred dollars, went the next day, paid the cash, and in half an hour wcre ready, had the question been poppcd, to say, Yes ! without a single jerk. I was soon made acquaiuted with sev eral other cures, quite as rcmarkable and resolved to put on niy sharpest wits and wait upon the magieian mvself. He seemed an hnnest, earnest man, and in two days I had made up my mind to pay a largo fee and learn the strange art, with the privilege of usiog it to cure whomsoever I would. Those who had been cured by the professor were solemuly bound not to reveal tho secret to any one ; but my coutract gave me the privilege of us;ng the knowledgeas I pleased. And uow I propose togive the readers of my journal a simple art which has enubled me to niake very happy tnany unliappy ■tiiinmerurs. In my own hands it has (it'ten f'ailed to effect the desired nsult, but in threo fuurths of the cases wliicli 1 have treated the cure has been complete. Tiie secret is eimply tl) Is : The stam ineror is made o mark the time in li is speech jast as it is orJinirily done in smging. He is first to beat on every syllable. It is best at the first lesson to read simple composition, like one of David's Psalms, stri.dng the finger on the knee at every word, tlien road in a nows paper, beating eaeh syllable. Soon you ueed only beat on every word. You eau beat time by striking tho finger on the knee, by simplv hitting the the thuinb against ilie fore finger, or nioving the largo toe in the boot. 1 doubt, it' the worst case of stuttering could continue long, provided the sufferer would read an uour or two each day, with tho thorough practice of this simple act, observing the same in his conversation. As thoimnds have paid fifty and a huudrud dollars for tbia secret, I take great pleusure in imparting it to the patrons ot my jourual.
