John W. Tompkins, forrnoly a clerk of the Board of Aldormen, and recently a violent secessionist and recruiting officer of the Southern Confederacy, was shot dead this afternoon by Henry 3-reen, watchman. Tompkins was halooing for JefF. Duvis, and was requcsied to desist by Green, when he drew a tnife on Green, when Green shot him. The Coroner's verdict just rendered, enys Green sh;t Tompkins without suíEuient causo. Tompkins had been endeavoriag to send contraband articles Southward by tho Louisvillo and Naahville Kailruad during the past week, and has oeen the main causo of the recent midnight disturbunees at the depot of Lhat ro::d. Outsiders not exarnined beibre the Coroner say Tompkins fired a pistol at Groen before Gi'cííii shot hún.
