At the recent Antislavcry Convehtion a Albany, a spirited discussion arose on the na ture and principies of the Native America party. Mr. Leavitt thought Liberty me were not called üpon to condemn tho Native party. But the groar majority thought diffèreutly. Gerrit Stnith spoke against it at considerable lengt !i. Mr. Smith said he had before occupiei sonie time on this resolntion, therefore ho 6hould be brief. He thought this Convention should express iiself ngainst tho Native An.et ican party. (Applause, and some hissing.J He thought eo, because we had expressed ou views of the other parlies. This paity is worse than intolerant. But its prejudices nev er could be strong enough for its purposes unless bu'Jt on prejudice against the Catholic religión. Should this feeling have a widespread existence, it woula nvolve this country in war and blood: with Catholic bigotry on the one hand and Protestant bigotry on tbe other. Mr. Smith said, the party is proslüvery. ["Prove it,-' said a voice.] Well, I will prove t, said Mr. S. Who is put forward as the head of the party in th9 State' Mayor Harper- who, as book-maker and scll er, has done more than any other man to rnutilale the antislavery literature of the country. Membership in their aasociations ie limited to white persons. Mr. Smith nsked the oudience to teil him when the Whig or Democjatc parties had been guihy of such infamy? - How did that party vote In the preeidential rlrction? For t.vo blood red slnveholders!- Is not such a party PROSLAVERY? Is it not higli time, then, to speak outagninst such a party? In addicion to these reasons, we are called upon, also, I repeat, to express ourselves against the intolerance and bigotry of that party. Mr. TAPPANagreed with Mr. S. that we oughtto niake an expression agaitist this party. But the question was, as to what language should be used. They withheld their sympathies from 3,000,000 of colored Americans. All seemed lo be agreed in an expression against the party; and tbis was his reason. The question to lay it on the table was taken and lost. The question was then taken on the amend ment of Mr. Leavitt and lost, and a motion adoplmg the resolution in its original form prevailed.
