Wixciif.ll, who accompauied the exploring parties " iu the special capacity of botanical cüüeotor and assistant." The report on Geology is is seven chapters, and we can givo no better idea of its scope and cljaracter than by introducing the titles of the several ehaptera. I. Organization of t!ie Survey and plan of operations. II. Depositiou, disturbance and denudation of Strata - General Physieal Structure of the Northwest. III. General Sketch of the Geology of Michigan, and its connection with surrounding distriets. IV. General Obscrvations- Tablo of Geological Formations. V. Tables of deep borings in the State with an exhibition of their Geology. VI. Economical Geology (ineluding Metallic Ores, Goal, Building Stones, Materials for Cemente, Mïteriala for Ornamental Purposes, Materials for Paints, Gypsum, Salt, Clays, Sand ;uid Gravel, Grindstones, Litiiographio Stones, Materials for lioads and Walks, Soils, Materials for iraproviug the Soil, Wells and Springs. VII. Physieal Geography, Topography, Ilydrogrnphy, Meteorology. This report embraces niuch informatiou theoreticiil and practical coneerning the physieal resources of the State The Zoological portion of the volume contains a " Catalogue of the Mammals, Birds, Reptiles and Mollusks" of the State, and will be found valuable to the student of natural history.
