Winter Amusements

The people of the Northern States are not going to forego their usual cold weathr amusemoDts the coming seuson, on accouDt of the war, and even if such a thing wero possible, t would not by any means bo desirablo. Thosa who labor physically or mental ly will need their recreation as much as ever, and surely we re not so much reduced by war, that our usual amusements must be deemed ill timed or in bad taste. But at the ame time, it would be well if the balls, nd parties, and sleigh rides might be merged in some other form of amusements whieh would be equally as pleasaut, and at the same time have a patriotio intent to furnish our soldiers with clothing and other uaeful articles. Tuis doublé object might be obtained by the ntrodutioo. of ocial meetings, or " sociables," into every village or every school district, where tbc old aud youug miglit come togetber and work for the soldiers, aud have social times. A series of such meetings as thoso, held every oue or two ■weeks during the wk'ter, would be productive of much good to the brave fellows who are Sghting our battles for us, and would be a source of muoh rationa! enjoyment besides. Such sociables might be started in any village if some ptrioUoally individual would only take Hold of the matter; and if balls and iuoh costly amusemenu should be dispensed witli this winter, and all olasses dovote their surplus funds to the good of tho soldiere, and at the same time have thoir cuatomary eujovmont by carrying into effect sorao plan liko the above, it would be a oonsumation very much to be desired. - [ Üprinyjied, Republic.an.
