New York, Jan C. Tlio steamsbip VanderbUt, froni Port Royal tbe 3d, has arrived. She brings 3,697 bales of cotton. General Stevens' brigade advoooed on tlie tuain land on the lst and took possession of the rebel batteries, ifter a short resistar.ee. Th o troops were assisted by tho gun-boats in ehelling the rebels. General Stevens followcd up to within six miles oí Charleston. A flag of truco íroin tho rebels requested permission to bury their dead, and an hour was granted for the purpoíe, when they foll back on their fortifications, which nre eaid to be very oxtonsivü and defended by f rom 11,000 to 12,000 men, under General Pope. - Their loss is unknown. Onr force was 4,500, and had eight wounded, inolflding Major WaUon, of the Eight Michigan, mortally.
