Granting that all wns true which is nllegcd of the ntellecunl condition and politica] disposilion ofemigrants, which I deny; yetintolerar.cè nnd proscription wonld but incrense the evüs coniplained of. TIip mester answered - "Neither hath this man sinned or his parents, but that rhe works of God ehonld be mode manifest in hinv' ' Though many tnay nsk who did fin, these hnigrants or their parents, that they were born under oppression yet I have fnll confidence that the Cliristian sjiiiit will prevail. nnd that we shal! all become satisfied that the exile is cast upon onr sliores n'ot to be prosenbed or 'persecutod, but that the principies of Liberty and flumanity muy be made more manifest among us, for the encoimigemenl and ultímate emancipntion of mankind. I cannot now leave my home íind its carea to share with 3-onr feátiviiies, nnd therefore I pray you to nccept in tliid form aseurances of my abiding fideli'y and grateful and affectionute resnect.
