The programtne included some clio'ce pieces and the performers all executed their parts well, as was evidenced by the oft-repeated applause. Private Lewis G. IIurd, of Co. D, FDurth Micliigan Regiment, died sud denly In the Patent Office Hospital, Wasbiiigton, on the lGth inst, of typhoid pueumodia, aged 21 years, 5 months, and 13 days. He was a soa of Dr. Hurd, cf this city. His funeral obsequies were attended at the Congregational Church in this city on Sabbath afternoon last, after which the remains were sent to the foraiier residenee of the fainily in Illinois for intermeut. Young Hurd's comrades speaks of him as a good soldier, and lament his deeease. E-JJT The trial of Chester O. Arnold for killing Whalen, reaulted ia his conviction for manstaughter aud sentencc to State Prison for two ycars. The jury united in a petition that ho bo finod on condition that he would onlist.in the Navy. Thiswas doubtlcss well intended, but wo ssriously question the policy of .sucb. sentences, as unjust to honorable uien who have voluntarily eutcred into their country 's "service. B@_ The details of the'fight at Winchester, on Sunday last, show that it was severoly contcsted, Federal loss is put at not to exceed 100 .killed and 300 wounded. and the rebel loss at 700 killed and wouuded, and 236 prisouers, wfth 1,500 muskets and several field pieces. - Gen. Williams' brigade was in the engagement, commanded in his absence by Col. Donnclly of the 28th N. Y. - Col. Broadhead's eavalry are reported as having made a gallant charge, driving the enemy before them. - Our loss was principally Ohio and Pennsylvania troops. - At the latest adviee, the retreating rebel column had been pursued five miles beyond Straburg. - It is said that an Irish battalion in the rebel service refused to fire upon the Union men, and that an attempt to compelí them to fire signally failed. The several Republican Ward Caucuses have been called to meet on Monday evening next, March 31et, and the Kepublican City Convention to meet on Friday, April 4th, at 7 o'clock, P. M.
