Suppose every Liberty man in thcU. States had yielded to the earnesi and oft repeated entreatieaof the Whigs, and hud actually voled llthis 07cs" for Mr. Clay, whaí wouíd have been the result? It raight, to besure, have secured his elecüon. But what ndvantage would that have been to us, or ihe canse we advocate"? Most clearly nono at all. Our pofitical existence and moral power would have been sacrificed upon the altar of time-serving expediency, and we, as á party, have made oursëlves disreputable for life. ín ihe cyes of the Dsmocrats, who compose about one half of the entire nation - we should have rendered oursélves a hÏ3sing and a by-word. In the estimation of Whigs, we should havs been a puny. sickly few, ready to be purchased at low rate. They would despise, fear, and bate us. Despise us for our want of stamina and principie; and fear us, lest when another elecüon should come, we might as easily be wheedled intothe support of the "Locos," and thus deteat them. But thank heaven, notwiihstanding the orators and editors paid homage at our and begged us in thename of God and sufiering humanity 'heartless pretence) lo aid them in their struggle, the Liberty party has mantained itsdignity, preserved its identity, and n despite of Roorbacks, foïgeries, deception and lies has stood erect, made itself respected, and now stands fortli a well organized party, ready to do effectuul battle in the cause of human freedom. Whigs and Democrats now look upo: our örganization as permanent & lasüng. it strikes dismay into their ranks. We have conyinced iha world that we are in earnest, and that we are governed by inflexible principie, and that we shall not be turned aside irorn ouf course by eithér of the pro-slavery parties gF the day. But we shall continue tothunder by moral and political power in the ears of this guilty nation, until the powers of darkness & opprëssion with slaveryshorrid reign. give way to the mild and equitablë réign of freedom, justice, and trath.
