During the fifteen years ending Ht Januay, 1841, the Journal of Commerce says that 1534,480 imigrants arrived at the port of New Vork nlone. Il wo'ild not be extravagant to ay, th t the whole'numbor of foreigners who migrated to ihe Uni'ed States du ring ihat peiod, wcs It also estímales thnt he average annunl imigration for the last SP een years, hasbe?n eleven times grenler thun l was duiing the 36 years ncxt succeeding he Revolution. The New York Evengelist [notes the 6tatementa of the Journal of Com nerce with great apparent concern, asking vhere this tliing is to end, and apprehending much peril to our instlutions from this 'dc!uge of foreigners.' Á few considerations will show that rII this anxiety is unnecesdary. During the last fifoen yearp, the total increase of the population ïae been a little over five millions. Allóvvng one roülion for imigrution, the actual increase hns been four nnllions. Tlje grcat majority of this one million is cornposed of persons, ha ving inconteslibly all he necessary qualifications for good citizenship. A majority of imigrants being adults, it is reasonabie to snppose. juding from the average chances of human life, that a lnrge projonion of thern deceaee in balf a generation . If nothing else can, one important fact, vvhich our panic stricken patriots seern to forget, should aüay their It is, tbat of all of these foreign imigrants, not oBe has begottcn a fortigner! Every. child born among them is u built Native American. Just ihink of that when you fcel alarmed about this deluge of foreigners. The tide of Native lnfïuence must necesa rily go on increasing, rising higher and higher above all other influences. These very imigronis contrri'oute to it in the course of nature. Our increase tlie next ten yeare will be si. millions. Allowing the increase of foreign imigration to be so rauch greater tban for the last ten years, as to swell the numberf imigrants to a hundred thousand annually fortbo mxt decadp, stil] it will bear a lesa proportion to the nativa increase, I han it has bnrne for the last fif'tfen years - being1 but one sixlh of the who!e. And so the prccess wil) go on, thé Native incrcase becoming every year, greater and greater in proportion to the foreign increase. Let no mou's heart then be troubled. The larger proportion of foreigners really adds to thewealth and substnntial prospcrity of the country. The increase of the vho!e, compared with that of ihe Native population, is not such as should alarm any body, and at al! events is becoming less and lees every year: they themselves contributing necessarily lo the growth of the Natives. All we have to do then is, to treat tliem fratemally, idenwfy thcm with tho countri', by sharing with Iliem its privilegee, provide for them the means of educaiion, and trust to Nature and Providence
