All the strategems used to gct a reply from him to letters fuiled ; he either did thcai at all, or directed his private sewetary to do so, and thus the ■ famous slgnature of " Wellington" became ;i rarity higlily prize by collectors. A lady who had in ilbum garuishcd with the auipgraphs of most of the great men ofthc dáy, but who wanted that of the i; Great Captain," mentioued her distress to the late Mr. If ., and ;i few days after, he, to lier great surprise and pleasiire, bronght her a note from uuder the hand of the vietor of Waterloo. It ran thus: " Marshal Uw Duke of Wellimjton necer onkral a pair of bruces from the Messrs. Simplcin. If F.M. the Dulce of . Wellington had ordered the artichs, he cmld not forget it. F. This was a very odd document for a lady's album ; but its authentieity was mul mlitol. and it therefore found the bast place in the intcresting collection. The v;iy in which this singular note was êücited was this : Mr. II fiilled up (i:i of the Kankniptcy Court forras, and signed it, infonoiog the Duke that in BUKtdiag up the affain of Messrs. Simpkin he (the assignee) found on their book the suiu of Os. 6d. due by his Grace for a p;iir of braces, which he requested the dttko would pay or have paid. Mr. If u ruse was founded on pure fiction, but it succeeded ; and now in a certain laily's album 111.13' hc scen the curious uote of which we have givon a copy.
