We present ik to our oíd Stato as a tokon of the love wo bear her, and as a tribute to tliat State prido which has aroused iu her sons a desperate determi.iation to die rather than tear away a singlo oueof her laurels. Uf tho thousand composing my regiment, six hundred in killed and.WoüDdéd, have attested, in recent bïittles, the loyalty to that revolution whiuh our State inaugurated, aud the survivurs, sido by side with other sons of Carolina, I trust wilt yet show to her sister States that, faithful to her promises, she fears not the saorifices nece&sary to its success lt is with special pleasure I intrapt this trophied flag to the hands that first grasped the helm when our 8!ate began its course ty honor and to duty. The following is Gov. PickenV reply : State o Squra Cxtouxx, ) HEADQrAKTKRS, COtUHBIi, Juli 29 '62. j" To Gen. Micaii Jexkins: Dkar Si : - l had the honor ihis day to receivo f'rom your liunds the State flag of a Michigan regiment, styled the Stoekton Regiment lt bears on its face the insignia of that State, and was borne with a view to lead a fanalioal horde of invadors to our suliju.iration. The brave and heroio men whom you commauded wilh so mach skill and intrepidity on the 27tli nltimo, captured it iinongst other standards on the bloody field of victory. I rijoioe that your devoted attachment to your own 8tate, while you hold her commission as a Colonel. prompted you to obtain permission to present this memento, through me, to your mothcr. I received it as sueh, and I trust it will long be cherisued as an emblem whioh will transmic to posterity your valor and high s'ldiership, as exlubitod on thosc terrilio fields of triumph bèforè Will iamsburg, and at the Seven Pinep,as will as in the recent battlos natu Ilichuiond, througli which you have fought your way to fame, and have uobly wou your right to bear a " batön" as a peer ainong the Generáis of a heroic Republic. I triad you in service amongst the first, when we stood alone as a State, and you wure a Colonel of tho State u hen alone; I take pride in your promotion, and hand you over to our comiuou Coufederacy, to serve hereafter on a wider fiield, with a moro extecded commaud ; but I know in nosituation, however more temptitig or captivating, will you ever forgct the scenea of y our earlier associations, or the promund satisfaction of having served your State whou to serve her was indeed full of danger and uncortainty. The Stato has feit deeply fyr our soldiers, in Virginia and ia the West, and our mothers have wept tears oí sorrow for our beloved doad and wounded, and araong those your brave regiment have suflered more than ita quota. But if those who survive aeliieva our indepcndence, as I have never for a moment doubted they would, then will we owe them a debt of gratitude whieh oan nover be paid in our duy and generation. With creat respect, yours trulv.
