Tho Indinns tiicn prepared to carry the pnst by storm, but tbe gallant conduct of the men at the guns entirely paralyzed tliem and oompelled them to withdraw, after on e of tho mos1: determined uttacks, made by Irdians on a military post. The men of companieH H and C, Fifth Regimeot Minnesota Volunteers, aided by citizens, did rood exeeution, and deserve the bigliest praise for their. heroio conduct. Mr. Wykoff, of the Indian Department, ar.d many other citizens, rendered effieicnt service. Our small arm animunition r.early failed. On consultation with Ordnance Seireant Jooea, I ordertil the balls to be removed from some of the sphericnl case shnt, and many of tlio ! balls fired by the Indiaan were colleoted and reeast. Atnniunition was prepnred by a party of men and ladies, organized for the purpose, wbn workcd night and day un til a good supply was obtained. The buildings composing the government propurty are still np, but they aro very much wreckcd. All the ings excopt tbc guard Iiouso and th mngazinep, weie enürely destroyed.- Most of tlie niules and oxcn belocging to tho Quarteriuastei's department were taken by tho Indians, aud we are left with a searee supply of transportaban.
