Washington, fcept. üb. T he War Department has issued tho íollowing order respeeting spedal Provost Marshals, und definitie: their dutius. First. - Hiere shall be a Provoat Marshal Genoral of the War Department, whose headqnartera will bu at Washington, and who will have the imruodiato supervisión, control and manage roen t of the corpa. Second. - There will be opporntad in each State ono or mire special Provost Marshals, as necessity muy reqilire, who will report to and reoeive ostTuetiona and orders frotn the Provost Mtrahal General vi the War Department. TAird.-lt will be the diity of the speoiul Provost Marsh als to arrest all desertéis, uhether regulara, volunteers or militkt, and send them lo the nenrest militaiy ceamiander or military post, wlieie they can be cared for and sent to their respective regimenta; to ai rest upon the warrant oí the Jndge Advooate, all disloyal persons subject to arrest under the War Department ; to ínquire into and report troasonable practices, seize stolen or embezzled property of the government ; detect spies of the enemy, and pertorm such other duties as may bo enjoined upon them by the War Department, and report their proceedings pronsptly to the Provost Marshal General. Fourth. - To enable special Provost Marshals to discharge their dnlies efficiently, they are authorized to cali on any available military iorce within their respective districts, or else to employ the assistanco of citizens, constablec, sherifi.s or polico officers, so far as raay be necessary, under such regulations as miw be prescribed by the Provost Marshal General of tho'War Depart ment, with the approval of the Secreta ry oi War. Fifth. - Necessary expenses incurrec in this service will be paid on duplícate bilis ccrtified by the special Provosi Marshal, stating the time Lnd nature of the sarvice, after examinatioo and approval by the Provost Marshal Gen eral. Sixth. - The compensalion of speeia Provost Marshals will be - -,- dollars per inonth, and actual trave'ing ex penses and postage will be refunded or bilis certified under oath and approvec by the Provost Marshal Genorol. Seventi - All appointments in this service will be subject to be revoked at the pleasure of the See.retary of War. Eightk. - All ordera heretofore issued by the War Departrïient, conferring auth'ority "pon otfaer officers to act ae Provost" Marshals, escept those who have received special conunissions from the War Department, are hereby revoked.
