üaltimore, April 28. Thero are uiauy wild stories afloat liero to-day of rebel depredations ín Western Virginia, on the line of the Baltiinore and Ohio Railroad. Information believed to be reliablü states that someguerrill acavalry penetrated to Rowlesburg anfl Altamont, Western Virginia, but were drivcn off and no üainagu was dono .to theroad and government property. There are also reporta of a rebel force having marehed westward but it is believed that this uiovement Las been cheokmated by our troops. New York, April 28. The rumor that thé rebels are marching on Wheeling or Pittsburg, rests on the faet that a forcé has appeared at Morgantown', Virginia, on the Monongahela Uiver, and near the State line of Pennsylvania. No fears are entertained for the safoty of either Pittsburg or Wheeling. It is not probable that the rebel furces had proceeded any futher North. A dispatch to the Washington Star of Monday evening, dated Harper's Perry, 27th, says: " We havo inforraatioü that the rebel Generáis, James and Imboden with sorne force, it is not said how great, are at Moorefield, probably on tbeir way to New Oreek to destroy the Baltimoro and Ohio railroad in that vicinity. Tho Baltimoro American of Monday says : - " llumors of rebel approaches to the Ealtimore and Ohio Ratlroad assume quite a serious aspect. During Suuday moruing a movement of 8,000 troops was made on the railroad, to strengt hen the poiut west of Cumberland, and fcwtf regiiuents left Baltiinore to tako the places of those moved further wcstward. On Sunday night tjvo compauies of rebel cavalry made their appearance at Jlowlesburg, but were driven off aud did not sueceed in dumaging the Cheat lliv er bridge. There has also been a rebel force for two daya, not far frona Clarksburg, threatening an advance on the road. A rebel force of 1,000 ander Gen. Boyd, left Winchester early this week. Measmcs were taken to check thetn.
