St. Louis, Ju]}' 22. A special mesaeriger to the Rcpublican. from Memphis July 2Oth, eays : ' By nn arrival from below, we have Nutchez dates to the 15th inst., Jacteon löth, and Vicksburg 18tb. Gen. Hherman ordered a charge on Johnston's forces on Friday, but they had so far escaped that eapturing was out of the question and we only got a lew stragglers, a few guns, ood some araraunition. A portioo of Sherman's arniy ia now in Jackson, which is his leadquarters, whilo the reraainder is on its way to Vicksburg. Johnston's army swam the Pearl river. Eight etoamers left Vicksburg on 3th for Natchez, having on board twelve hundred soldiers underthe corn"nand of Gen. Eansom. On his arrival ie captured five rebel officers. Crossing the river, he oaptured a battery of line guns, four of which ai e 12-pounder Parrots. He then rnarehed back nto the country nine miles, captured 247 boxes of ammunition and nine more guns. The rebels fled in consternation. On returning to Natchez he 'ound 5,000 head of cattle and 4,000 ïogsheads of augar, all of which ho -ook possession of.
