Down in the depths of the forest There is a bubbling spring, Where the waters' tinkling music Is ever murmurlng , But never has bent above it A single human face ! 0 who shall be flrst to love it, Or the line of its melody trace t Down in the depths öf a mountaiu There is a precious gefn- It would fonn a radian t center For an Empress' diadein But alone in the darkness, While centuries pass away ! O who shall dig to its dungeon, And give it the light of day 1 Down in the depths of the ocean There is a beauteous shell ; The hall to its fairy chamber Is fashioned quaint and well ; And the music within its bosom Would soothe the human soul ! 0 who in the coming ages Shall hear that music roll ! Down in the depths of my epirit There is a fount of thought ; . For years it has struggled upward, And yearn'd, and prayed and wrought . But the deepest depths of its waters Have never yet been stirred ! 0 where is the weird musician Can speak the mystic word 1
