It sufficiently esplains itsslf: Uxited States Assessor's Offce, ) Phiko Collectios District of Mich., Lansiug, June 19th 18(53. ) Dear Sir : Your letter of the 14th lust., com)laining of what you believe to be an unust assessment of your income by Mr. Yocum, assistant assessor for the llth División of this District is received. In aDswer, I may say it is possible and even iTobable that tny Assistants, having no irecedents to aid thera in operating the aw, should make mistakes and erroneous assessnments. In all sucb cases your remedy is by written appeal to the Asessor, at the time and place named in a public notice to be given hereafter. A farmer who has returned all the roduetions of his farm is allowed to deluct therefrom the subsisteuce of Horses, Mulcs, Oxen, and Cattle uscd excluively in carrying on the farm, also the eed of fatted animáis sold and reported. Jut when he has not reported the amount aised and fed, to his sheep, hogs, catle, &c , as you claim to have done, then ie must return as profits the difference etween the value of the stock on the 31st Dec, 1861 aDd the 3lst Dec, 1862. t is the actual gaim of the year only hat the law taxes after fixing $600 as a sufficiency for the persopal expenses of he family. L3C" The Ainericans present at Heidelburgr, Germany, on the 4th of July, celebrated our national anniversary in an appropriate manoer, by reading the Declaration of Independence, a dinner, and after dinner speeches. About eeventy Americana participated. The American Consul at Glasgow presided, Dr. Norton, of Detroit, was toast-master, and Rev. Dr. McCltntock, of Paris, said grace. Prof. A. D. WniTE, oí our city, responded to the toast - " Our Revolutionary Fathers," and W. W. Muuphy, Esq., of Jonesville, Consul General at Frankfort on the Main, to " Our Army and Navy." SS" Mr. C. J. Bkydqes, the Managing Director of the Grand Trunk Railway, is bound that the people shall travel. He announces that on the 5lh, 6th, 7th, and 8th of August tickets will be issued, good to return up to the löth of August, for $8, for the round trip to Buffalo, Niágara Falls, Lewiston, and Toronto via Sarnia back to Detroit. Passengers will go by the New York Central from Buffalo Lewiston, and down the Niágara River and Lake Ontario by the steamer Zimmerman. On the same days, tickets will ba issued to Buffalo and return for $6, good for the same time. American money will be taken at par at refreshment rooms and lor berths sleeping eaus-. Tickets ean be obtained at the Company's office, Michigan Central Depot, Detroit or at 134 Jefferson. Avenue. JE3T" Gen. Sherman bas evacuated Jackson, Miss., and fallen back towards Vicksburg.
