The New York Tribune says the following is extracted frcui a letter from Matamoras, toa gentleman in New York. It is dated on the 16th of June : " Thero is a rumor hera that 7,000 French soldiers are on tlse way faere ironi Vera Cruz. It aeeds confinuation. ïf true, the au&borities wUl etideavor to meet and figfct thera with such foroes as they can collect. ïhey will surely dispute with an earnest struggle for the possessiou'of Tamaulipas, and f course this most important town would be the principal jjrize lo be fought for. The Mcxicatisare resolute and will fight tbe Fnench to the last. Tbey are uiuted here iu their opposition to the invaders. Mirsmon is the lion of Fort Brown of late. He ha3 attempted to tamper with the authorities here, but has utteily failed. Some are deseTters, some aro subject to conscrip tion in the rebel servbe, but most of the 5,000 or 6.000 who have passed through this place were conipelled to leave the State to -sav-e thiir -lives, %ecaase out "mistafcan Soutbern brethren " suspected them of being in heart, and, ia faot, "citizens of the United States." Many wio were skulfcing frrnn liill to hill, and forest to forest, in Northern Texas, seeking to get out of the country, and only desirous of being " let alone," have been trailed by assassains and ruurdered outright. ï do not doubt that 2,500 murders have been coinmUted within two years in Texas, every one of which has 'heen for " suspected -sympatliies" for the old flag; but the new arrived nre aR radicáis - all iutend reTenge. Sixteen men from near Austin, ouly a week ago, arfived here, and two of them (op.eantphew of Gen. Hamilton) is on the way to New Orleaus There are hundredsF as good tnen in Texas as there are out of it. The Germans, and thousands of Amerieans in Texas are loyal ; Texas would be loyal if the reign of terror was at an end.
