At a recent meeting of the State Democratie Editorial Convention of PennsylTauia the followiog resolutious were ■ adopted : Whereas, The freedom of speech andof the prsss ha3 ever been a cherished nglit, fuumlud as ell ia reasou as in law, nd gunranteed to us by t!io constitution 9f the Uuited States, as well as the oontitutiou of Pennsylvania ; and Whereas, lts maintenancoisessential to the intelligent exereise of the electivo franchise; And whfreas, lts abridgemement or iuppression is a direct thrust at liberty, and, in a popular government liku our.s. a tactit confcïsioii that the acts of thosé who attemt unwavrantably to destrey tuis sacred right wiil not stand the test of public diseussion and the verdict of k free people ; therefore, Resolved, Tliat freedom of speech and of the press is as necessary to the perpetuity of liberty as tbo freedom of the ballot box; and those wlio assail tbe rights of the fermer vvould not hesitate to strike down the latter, and are equal]y the enemies of the people. Resolved, That we einphatiMily de nounceevery attempt to interfere with or abridge the liberty of or of the press, whether it be by the linlawM arrest and iniprisonmcnt of public speakers and editors, or by suppressing newspapers by either mob violence or pretended civil or military autlnrity. Resolved, That inasmueh as this] lib erty interests every citizon, and its deni], abridgement or extinction tuay ef fect him personnlly, we cali upon all, without diatinction of party, to vindícate tbeir lrgb privileges in this behalf ; and here we cannot but express our nstouishnient tbat repub-lican editor have not only by and seen this dea rest of American rights violated, but have actually approved and endoraed the ?iolation. Rexoleed, That let otters do as thoy may, for ourselves we intend to stand up for our rights as American freemen ; that we will never yield them, but will assert and maintain them by our voiees, by our votes, and, if need bo, with our lives. Resolved, That the so-oalled rulers of the Aiueriean people are but their agenta aud to deny the riglit of the principáis to direct, control or critiaise the acts of their agent, is as repugnant to the principie of law as of eommou Pense.
