Tlie Board of Regenté of tUc Universïty of Michigan, met om lbo 2Stb inst., at 1ÜA o'eloek. A. M. The ncw President of the University appeared and toük h!s scat as President oí' the Board of Regenta. On assuming the position, Dr. Haven' made a few reniarks on tbc duties conneeted with it. We out the following summary o? the prooeedinga from the Detroit Tree Presa. 4-t t-lio last meeting of tho Board, the Ootnmittee on the Medical DepartmeBt had been instnicted to 'examine uto and report to the Board of Regents, at thfii' earliest eonvenieiice, upon the expcdieney of providing for a courss of Lectures in the University on Hyrieue in èlie Medical Department, and upon Hygiëne, Physiology, and Anatomy in tho Department of' Literature, Science, and the Arts, and if, in their judgnient, it should be expedient to do so, to rceommend some suitable plan for carrying out such reeommendation." The committee noiv reported in favor of establishing such a courso in tho Literary Department at least, not being prepared at present to report in favor of otablishing a course in the Medical Dtpartment in addition to tliose already establishcd therein. In eonnection with their report, they presented an outline of the course reconimended, as prepared by Pruf. A. B. Palmer, embraeing Lectures on tho Principies of Personal or Individual Hygiëne, the Laws of GeneratioD as Pertaiuiug to Health Méntsl Hygiëne, Domestic Hygiëne, Public Hygiëne, or Conditions which affect the Health of Comniuuities. In order to carry out thoir reeommendation, tho committee recommended tho adoption of tho followttg resolutious : Í Mes'olveè, That a course of lectures upon Hygiëne is hereöy established, and modo part of' the curriculum iu the De partmeut of Literature, Seienco and the Arts. Resolved, That Prof. A. B. Palmer bo, and he is hereby, eonstituted anc appointed Leeturer on Hygiëne in the Department of Literaturo, Seience aiu the Arts ; and that his term of service be extended throughout. tho Academie year with a salnry of $1,500 per annuin. On motion of Regent Bishop, the pre amble an;! resolutions passed at the meeting of tho University Sonate on the Oth July, in referenco to the oiianges made by the Board of the cfficers of the University, wero ordered to bo entere at length and printed in ■ tbc minutes o the Board. Regent Mclntyre, on behalf of the committee on the Law Department, stated that the exercises for tho opening of the law building would consist sübstautially of the following: In tho morning, the inauguration of Dr. E. O. Haven as President, of the University, to be followed by an address by Professor Gliapin, the new Professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy ; in tho afternoon, an address by Professor Walker, on tht opening of the new law building, apoera by D. Bethune DufKeld, Es.]., and an address by Prof. Arinor. The committee on the Observatory roported, recommending the adoption of the following resolution : Resolved, That Prof. James C. VVatson, be transferred from his posttion as ProfesVor of' Phyaiea and Instructor of Mathematica, to tho Directorship of tho übservatory and Professorsliip of Astronoruy, with a salary of 1,500. Fiattering testimoniáis wcro rcad by Regent Mclntyre, certifying to the eminent ability of Professor Watson and his qaalifioations for the position, from Dr. ]{ A.. Gould, of Cambridge, Professor Pierce, of Harvard University, Prof. Winlock, Commodore Gilliss, of the U S. Naval Observatory, and Prof. Elias Loomis, of Yale College. Tlie resolution was adopted. A oommunicotion was read by the Secretary from Rev. Lueius D. Chapin, M. A., wlio aecepts the position offered him as Professor of Mental and Moral Philcsophy. It was aecopted and ordered to be placed on file. ïho Board then adjourned until 9 o'clock to-morrow morning. SECOND DAY. Tho Board reassembled at 9 o'clock A. M., pursuant to adjourntnent, present Regenta Baxter, Bishop, Brown, Johnson, Mclntyre, and Whiting. On motion of Regent Mclntyre, Prof. G. P. Williams, at his own request, was transferred from the Professorsliip of Mathematies to that of Physics, with a salary of SI, 500. Ou motion of Regent Brown, tho fulIowing resolution was adopted : Resolved, That Professor Edward 01ney, of Kalnmazoo, be and he is hcreby appointed Professor of Mathematies in the University, with a galary of 1,500 per aimuin. Regent Baxter offered the following : Resolved, That tho nominal appointnient of Professor A'vah Bradish, M. A., as Professor, of the Fine Arts, be and is hcreby discontinued. Carried. On motion of Regent Johnson, the preamble and resolution offered by him yesterdny, wero taken from tho table and adopted, as follows : Whereas, Applications are maJo to the Board of Regcnts from time to time, requiring changos to be made in tho course of University studies; and, whereas, sueh modifica tions ought bot to be made without the fullest consideration. Therefore, Rc'solced, That tho curriculum now purpued in tha Universitv courso be referred to the Academie Faculty, with the request that they examine and report upon it, at the next meeting of the Boüi-d of Regcnts, in regard to the following points: let. Is it expedient to continue the tlireo parallel eourses - the Ciasieal, the ScientifTC, and the so-c;illed Optional Course ? 8th. Is i% expedient to add one ycar to ! tlie undergriidunve course in order to embrace subjects tliat the four ycais' course do-es not adinit of? Regent Mclntyre offered the followitrg : Resohed, Tliat Charles K.
