The first of the September magazines is the Continental. Tha first artiele is on the "Souihern Hate of New England," which the writer regards as resulting frora the thoug'bt that New England, representa the Northern idea and under lying this as a sort of substratum 3 the Puritan idea. The poetry of the number is "Waiting for News," "The Cruel Carpenter," "The Gravo," and "The Deserted House." "The Early History of the Printing and Newspapor Press in Bos ton and New York" is a readablo article. This followed by an interesting military sketch entitlcd "Reconnoisance near Fort Morgan and Expedition in Liko Ponehetrain ar.d Pearl River by the Mortar Flotilla of Capt. D. D. Portor, U. S. N." Then comea the "Diary of Francés Krasinska," a sketch of lifo ín Poland during the nineteenth century. The Isle of a description, of Jamaica. The fifth chaptcr of ReasoD, Rhymeand Rymthm1' comes next, and this is followed by an essay on "Remembrance," and a paper on tho "Graat Riot."
