Washington, Sept. 14. I have some details of the oeoupation of Culpeppor by our forcea, aod tho retreat of the rebels. The cavalry advanced Saturday night in three columns, (iregg Irom tiulphur áprings, Buford froin Beverly ford, and Kilpatrick froiu Kelly's ford, to concéntrate at Culpep}er. Tlie object, doubtlcss, was to drive in the rebel pickuts, and assertain difinitely the position and niovementa of the kebel army. The second corps sapported the inovement, advancing frorn iiappahannock station. The column on the left and ceutre inet with little opposition other than frora pickets. Grogg made a dash across Hazel Iiivcr at miduiglit, driving tho rebul pickets back on their works, then slowly withdrew his forco to the north of the rivcr. A body of robels oaine up to support the piekets, and wistook their own mea for Federáis. A brisk fight easued, in whioh tbo rebels cut each other up considerably, thcn discovering they were fightiug tbeir own men, concluded our rnorement a dash. - Tbis was what Gregg iuteuded, and advauced agaiu yestcrday moruiDg. ïho rebels oppused hun with artillcry, but by a succession of brilliaut charges he continued to drive tliorn back. In the nieantirae Buford and Kilpatrick bad anivcd in the vicinity of Oulpepper, where Stuart mut them with oaralrv and artillery. Fighting was quito spirited fr a time, but not serious ia result. - The rebel force feil gruduaily buck, und finally fled precipitatuly. Wo captured three guns, about fifty prisonors, and a large amount of public stores. Our own losses very sliglit. Gen. Pleasauton eommanded the movemeut in person, and ut 10 o'clock last uiglit announced to Meade the occupation of Culpepper. Gen. Warren carne up this morning with the Seeond Corps, aud now holdj tlie place. Gen. Pleasnnton had advanoed fivo miles beyond Culpepper at last accounts. Information obtained by this reconiioissanee is exeeedingly valuable and satisfactor. Longstrect has uuquestiouably gone west to succor Braggj taking onc corps. Lee arrived at Orange Court House on Saturday with two small corps. The entire army of the rebels is uu inoro than 40,000 in Virginia. They aro in no condition to take the ofFonsive. - Stuart's cavalry is all run down. Tho horses are in a miserable condition.
