Knoxville, Oct. 17. Major General Ur.IU-ck, Washington : On the Sth inst., the encmy hold down as far as Blue Springs, aud a oavalry brigade of oura held Bull's Gap, supported by a small body of infantry, at Morristown. 1 accordingly dispatcned a brigade of cavalry arouud by llogersvillo, to interoept tho enemy's retreat, and, with a considerable body'of iufautry íind artillery, moved" to Buli's' Grap. On Saturday, the lOlh inst., I advauced a cavalry brigade to Blue Springs, whero they found the enemy strongly posted and ofiering stubbora resistance. Skirmishing coutinucd until aboutiive o'elock ia tho aftornoon, whon I sent in a división of infuntry, who chargod and cleared the woods, gallantly driviug tho enemy in confusión until dark. During tlie nfght the enemy retreated prccipitately, leaving their dead on the field and most of their wounded in our hands. We pursued in the moraing with infantry aud cavülry the intercepted force aud met them at Hcndcrson's Cut, but owing to a mifluntderstandiug withdrew a'id alluwed them to pass, with only slight check. Tlie pursuit wns continued uutil evening, wben I withdrew most of my infantry and returned to the place. Gen. Slrickleford, with h is cavalry and a brigade of infautry, continued tlie pursuit, the enemy makiug a süuid ut every important position, bat he lias di'iven thom completely from tho State, capiurod tlie fort at Zollicoffor, and burnt tho long railroad bridge there and five other bridges, and destroyed three locomotivcs and about thirty-five cars. His advanco is now ten miles bevond Bnstol. Ouf loss at Hlue Springs nnd in the pursuit was about one hundred killed and wounded. The enemy's loss was considenibly greater. About one hundred and il ft v prisonors were taken.
