It has been my earnest eudeavor heretoforo to avoid participaron in party politics, and I aïn determiued toadhereto this course; but it is obvious that I cauuot longer roaintaio sileuce uuder such ïnisrepresentations. I therefore request you to deny that I have writtc-n any such letter or entertained any suoh views as those at tributed to me in the Philadelphia Press, and i desire to state elearly and distiuctly that, having sorae few days aso had a full eonvcrsation with Judgo Wöodward, I find that our views agreo ; and I regard his eleelion as Governor of Pcntisylvauia called for by the interests of the nation. I understand Judge AVoodward to be in favor of the proseeution of the war with all tliu lueaus at tlie eommand of the loyal States uotil the military power of the rebelliou is destroyed. I understand hiuj to be of the opinión that whifo the war is urgod with all possible decisión and energy, the policy directing it should be in consonanco with the principies of huiuauity and eivilization, werking no injury to private rights, aud property uot demanded by military nccessity and recognized by military luw among civilized nations; aud íinally, I uuder staud him to agree la the opinión tha? the sole great object of this war are the restorattoa of the coustitutiou, and the sajjreinacy of tbo kws of the country. físlieving that our opinions entirely agree upon tkese poinls I would, were it in my power, give to Judge Wöodward my voioe aud my vote.
