deneral Me:ioo wrote a letter to a friend in New Jersey iinmediately previous to bis late movemeut across the Rapidan, in wliich occurs the foüowing paragrapb : "I ain füllv avvare oí the great anxiety in the puLJio raiud that something should be done. I ain in reeeipt of raany letters, some from persons in high poskion, telling me I had botter have my army destroyed, aud the coun try filled up with the bodiea of the t-oldier, than remain inactivo. Whil-t I do not suffer myself. lo ba influenced by such Communications, I am and have been most anxious to effect sometbing but ara determined, at every hazard, not to atiempt anything unlees my judgment indicates a probability oi aöcompTULing swre object commensurate with the destruction of life neces8arily involved. I would rather a thoueand times be relieved, charged witb tardinees or incompeteacy, than have my coiiscienoe burdened.with a wanton slaughter, uselessly, oí brave men, or with having jeopardized the great cause by doing what I thought wrong." These are the words of a true soldier and a wise, prudent leader. What ever the fight at any oost people may eay, we believe the country at large will warnily iudorse the course of Gen eral Moade. He 8 at least a safe general - jast the sort of a one vre want in front of Washington.
