- Major-Gen, John üufbrd, who dieü at Washington on Wednesday, was a gradúate of the West Poiat Military Aeademy, and in the Regular ariny held the rank of Major in the Inspector General's Department. He was appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers on the 27th of July, 1862, and assigned to the cominand of a eavalrv brigade under Gen. Pope, in the Virginia campaigu of that year. When that anny waa mergod in tbe Army of ihe Poturnac, Gen. Bu ford was assigned to the command of the Kegular cuvulry brigade, whtuh he held unt;l the funnation of the cavalry corps into three divisions, when he was placed in command oí ihe First División, and eerved throughout the severe oampaign of the past ton months witb the most distingnished gallantry. He was considered tho best field cavalry commander in the service, and was noted for Lis coolness and judgment under fire. He was about forly years of age, of full habit, and a man of gcnerous nature and w;irm impulses. Beforo bis death tfao President rewardcd hitn with the commission of M.ijor General. The country lias lost a noble spirit and a bravo defender.
