New York, Jan. 17. The Ariel, from Aspinwall, brings $356,000 in treasure. Two engineers wen; expected in Gosta Kica from the United States to make surveys for a railroad to the Atlantic. The eteamer America, from New York Oct. oOih, arrived at Panamá on January lst. She brought news from Valparaíso that the cathedral in Santiago, Chili, caught fire on the 30lh ult., when densely cnva-ded witn people. The church contained 20.000 lights, from sorae of which fire was eommunioated to the drapery of the gigantiu image of the Virgin, and the paste board devices. In an instant a sheet of ñames reached along the festoon oí lights to the rotyf', and direpfly spread to all part? of the buildiug. The people r.üshed to the principal door, and it was eoon blocked. Most of the m n esciiped by the sacristy and side doors. But a few minutes elapsed ere the lights suspended so plenliiiilly from the roof, poured a rain of liquid öre on the people below. In less than fiftcen minutes over two thousands persons, rnostly females, were blackened corpses.
