Most orcbard trees have tbeir heads altogether too crowded; the limbs are allowed to fill up the eeutre so that light and air are excluded, and .the f uil development and maturity of the fruit preven ted. A distinguishéd poraologist in giving directions for pruning au orchard, advised to leave room euough in the centre of the tree for a barrel'into whieh to piek the apples ; and he was nci far from ïight. It requires but little trouble to get a tree into good shape, i f it is attendod to while young, when the knife will do tha work, whieh, if neglected, will neoessitate the 'use of the saw and ohisel. Where large scars are to be made, it is always best to defer pruning until Sumraer ; though eutting with the knife mny be dono after the severity of the Winter has passed. Trees should be síarted with a view to an open and well balaticed head, but where this has been neglecfced, tlley should be made as lïbarly right as possible before they get large VVherever a braneh will orowd aiïotber if allowed to grow, or will unduly fill up the centre of the tree, it should be removed. A timely, use of the knife i; cariy pfiogj and au oceasiona! summer pinehiug of a shoot disposed to grow where a liuib is not needtjd, will keep the top open. It is sotnetimes neoeasary n order to give the tree a proper balance, to induce a braneh to prolong itself ir.oro fhan it naturally would ; th can be dono by removin'c
