A detachment oí troops recentiy scouting in the valley of the Snake or Lewis fork of the Columbia, discovered a waterfal] which, it is aaid, is entitled to the distinction of being called the greatest in tbs world. The entire volume ol Snake Rivcr pours over a sheer preeipiee one huudred and ninety oight feet high, thirty eight feet higher than Jiiagara, and the cascade is one solid sheet or body. The locality oí tbis immense waterfull is near the poiut heretofore designated os the Great Shoshone or Salmón Fulla oí' that river, but they have ahvays been enveloped in jnystery. Almost a dozeo years ago Ihe writer passed along the Snake .River road. For two days ho heard Vhe roaring of these fallo, but earned no more respecting tbem than if they had been in the moon. It was ssid that ibero were a nenes of falls and rápida, making a descent ol seven hundred feet in the distance of seven miles, and the sound gave color to the reporte J"or bundreds ol miles acroes the great plain Sn:ike líiver flows through a canon, with vertical walls buodregs of feet high. It is only at long intervals that salient points are found by which the river can be reaehed. The road crosses from point topoinl of the bends, only approaching to the river where thera is a chance to descend for water. From these facts very few, if any, oï the tens of thousands that have crossed the plains ever looked upon the great lalls. The late discoverers report besides the inain cataraet many others of )esa beight, varying from twenty to fifty feet eauh, near by. Some day they will be visited by the touriat and pleasure seeker, and looked npon as frequently and iamiliarly as Niagnrais today ; and it will be admitted that, with the supendous grandeur of their surroundings, they are as far beyond Niogara as jjiagiira eseelg the balance of ihe vror-d.
