iJaltimore, i1 eb. ó. A special to tlio American, dated Cumberland, Md., Feb. 3d, 12 M., aays, the guard of oue company oí' infantry, posted at Patterson Creek bridge, cigiit miles east of Cumberland, was attaeked at 1:30 P. M., yesterday, by 500 rebel cavalry under Col. Kasser, and after a spirited riísistanoc, in wliicli two of our nieu wcro killed and ten wounded, the greater part of tlie company were captured. This aecomplislied t he rebels set fii-c to the bridge, and leaving it to destructiou s'.arted off with their prisoners. 'f ha employés of the railroad sueeecd ed in staying the fira and save,d the bridge with only partial damage. Gen. Averill. v.-ith bis command, who had been sent out from Martinsburg by Gen. Kelly, this niorning overtook the rebels nenr Springfield, and a severo engage'nent ensued. The rebels were driveu Uirough Springfield, and thence to and soutli of Burlington. Many of the rebels vrero killed and wounded, and our captures ara largo, inelutliiigthe recovery of our men taken yeeterday. and many horses. The enemy ore being hotly pursued by our cavalry.
