It is a reinarkable fact, that the career of four of the most renowoed charaoters that ever lived, clQsed with sotne violent or mournful death Alexander, after hoving climbed the dizzy heights of his ambition, and with temples bound with ehaplets dipped in the blood of countless nationa, looked down upon a conquered world, and wept that there was nat asother for him to conquer, set a city on fire and died in a scène of debauoh. Hannibal, aftey having to the astonishment and consternaron of Rome, passed the Alps; after having put to fliglu the. armies of the mistress of the world, and stripped three bushels of gold rings from the fiogers of her slaughtered knights, and made her very foundations cuake.fled from his country, being hated by those who once exultiugly uaited his name to that of God and calied hiin Hannibal - ■ died at last by poison, admiuistered hy his own hands, unlamented, aud unwept, in a foreign land. C;esar, after having eonquered eight hundred cities, and dyed his hands in the blood of one million of his foes ; after having pursued to death the only rival he had on earth, was rniserably assassinated by those he uonsidered his nearest friepds. and iu that very place the attaiument of whieh had been his greatest ambiüoB. Bonaparte, whose mandate kings and emperors obeyed, after having filled the earth with the terror of his uame, deluged-it with tei.rs and blood, and olothed the world with saek cloth, closed his days in lonely bauishment, almost litcrally exiled from the world, yet where he eould somctimes see his oountrv'9 banner waving over the deep, out whieh eould nol or would uot bring him aid. Thus four men who, from the peculiar situation of their portraits, seemed to stand as the represmitatives of all those whom the world calied great - those four who, each io turn, made the earth trem ble to its very center by their simple tread, severally died - one by intoxication or, as some suppose, by poison mingled with his wiuQ - aue a suicide - ono murdered by his friends - and one in lonely csile.
