Shortly before one o'olook tbia morning (March 12) a great reservoir at Bradtield, six miles fraw Sheffield, buist its embanktnent. The aiae uf the reservoir was niuoty-ti e acius, niad hut jnst ioisbed. This eiiormous bod}" oë water rushed (iown the valluy oí' the Don, sweeping u.way all the brulges over the river, a great number of houses on Ufc banks, and dentroying, it is feured, nsores of their inhabitants. The lower part of Sheffiuld was submerged eeveral feet deep, and lmndrods of families drive from iheir hoiuen. 'J'he flood has Dot yet subsided, and thu darnaure is incalculable. The Sheffield Telegraph givei graphic detalla, and says : A bout niidniglit a largo reservoir connected with the water works, and extending to above a milc in length, situa'.ed about neven miles from the town, siidduuly burst in, and inundated the valley of the Don, sweeping away en'iie villages, drowniftg the slecping inhabitanla by hundre'is. rJ'rees were uprooteil, and the dobris of buildings c:irried du-vn the river wu6 immer.se. In some of the Htreets of Sheffield the debris is pilt-d tip eight and ten feet high, and among it are found fragmente of iurnitnre and many dead bodies. Others are being gathered in h-om gardens into which they have floated. Exeitoment in the town cannot be described Business is at a standstill. Extent of mischief cannot be ascertained; hundreds of lives are mierifieed. ïhe dam was a new one. - The immense volume of water is still pursuing its eourse of destruetion. - Rotherham, Doncaster and many other towna will suffer ere the River" Trent ïoceives tbe excess of Water which bas been set at liberty.
