-The New York World speaking of the late destruction of several gunboats says : The sinking of sevcral Union gunboats near Plymouth, North Carolina, by a ïebel ram, is a uonspicuous instance of theshort-sightedness of our Navy Department. After all the experience gair.ed on the western rivers showing how effective n,.val rama were, :ind with a knowledge that several such were building in Norlh Carolina, as well as elsewhere upon tbe eoasl, not a single vessel of the same class is to be found on the Atlantic coast. Had the rebels one good sea going ram, it would be a match fnr our entird wooden gunboat fleet. Even the monitors would be of very little use agaiust a n;.val monster of this kitd. If thi' rebels do not inflict immense damage upon our fleet upon tho Atlantic coast, it will uot be the fault of Secretary Welles.
