The General Johnson in cominand of a rebel división, oaptured with ïuost of his command, by the gnllant Hancock, is Major Geueral Edward Johnson. He was bon) in Kentucky. ín 2834 he entered the West Point Military Academy in the sanie elass with Beaurcgurd, Hardee, and Sibley, now of the Confede rate service, aud MüDowell, Grauger and others coaimissioued iu the National army Johnton's rank was thirty-second iu a cliss of forty-five. On bib graduatiou in 1838, he was assigned to the 6th Infautry iis Secoud Licutonant, and beoame First Lieutenant, Octoberi), 1839. He was in the Mexieau war, whero he was distinguished at Moliuo del Rey, Chapultepec, and at the city of Mexico, rtceiving tvo brevets tirat as Captain and next as Major. He remained in the I -United States service until the 10 th of June, 18fil, wheu he resipned to enter the Confedérate service. He bears thu reputation of being a fine offiecr.
