Col. Sohaffer, ohief of staff to General Butler, and Gen. Ould, the rebel coramissioner of exchaogo, are tho best of friends, and in their official interviews are alwnys pleasant and agreeable to eacli other. A couple of weeks ago they were chatting at City Point over matters and things in general, wlien Col Schnffer pioked up a map of Virginiíi, aud glancing at it uasually, it occurrcd to liim that there waa a sigbt for a very largo eity in the vicinity of City Point, and expressed his astouishment that it had been overlooked so long. Said he, with great seriuusness: "If I had tlie capital I would invest it right here. lt's bound to bo a big city sotne Jay or another." Ould kept his eye on tho map for awhile, and then, looking at Scliaffur, remarked, hardly ablo to suppress a smile that 'as Irving to forcé its way out : "It seems to me, Colonel, that instead of building a new city, you ' had better take one already huilt " 'öani," said the Union colonel, "get that black bottlo out of' my basket;" and the rebel j ke was washed down with old rye
